    Ethernet-interface - advantages and disadvantages

    Via the Ethernet interface in this case, modules for measurement technology and control technology can be integrated into the data network that is usually already in place. The transfer rates are standardized from 1 Mbit to 400 Gbit. A transmission rate of 10 or 100 Mbit is completely sufficient for operation as an input / output or measuring module. The advantage of the Ethernet module is the range of the cabling and the large number of modules that can be integrated into the LAN network. The fact that the Ethernet interface usually provides galvanic isolation is also important. The reaction time must be mentioned as a disadvantage, which depends, among other things, on the switches and routers connected. In practical use, the response time is slightly higher than that of the modules with a USB interface.In industrial applications, however, Ethernet modules are preferred because of the potential separation, the longer cable length and the more robust software connection.
